Did you know who started Mother's Day?

Did you know the woman who founded Mother’s Day was childless and never married?

Anna Jarvis had spent many years looking after her ailing mother and preferred to remain single. When her mother died in Philadelphia on May 9, 1905, Anna missed her greatly and felt children often neglected to appreciate their mother enough while the mother was still alive. She dedicated her life to her mother's cause and worked to establish Mother's Day to "honor mothers, living and dead." She hoped Mother's Day would increase respect for parents and strengthen family bonds.

If you want a rainbow

After two days and 22 hours of flying, I am in Thailand, sourcing jewelry suppliers and creating new designs. I am inspired by the dexterity of the Thai weavers, their stone-setting abilities and their fine motor work which results in beautiful tiny charms, woven bracelets, pearl knotting and beading. I watched them tie a string to a chair and weave bracelets in a rainbow of colors within 5 minutes. I want them to weave my sterling silver charms into those stunning threads.

Let it shine - keep your silver and the environment clean

To honour earth day this month, remember to protect the earth while cleaning your sterling silver jewelry.

If you store your jewelry in an air-tight plastic bag, it will never tarnish. However, sometimes we forgot. So, to clean it this environmentally friendly method works well, is virtually free and does not smell or pollute the environment like the polish you buy in stores!

Aluminum Foil, baking soda and table salt. That's it.

- Place a sheet of aluminum foil in the bottom of a pan.
- Add 2-3 inches of water, 1 tsp of baking soda, 1 tsp table salt.
- Bring to a boil.

When life gives you lemons, ask for salt and tequila.

After a small spiral of self pity, I wasn’t sure if I was going to tackle this blog today but the eternal teenager in me loves the phrase, “When life gives you lemons, ask for salt and tequila:” So, I couldn’t resist.

This week, we returned from March Break to find our door open, the car stolen, my beloved Apple Computer (with no back up pre 2009) and half our Suetables jewelry inventory GONE! The robbers hit the jack pot! I was left with a sick pit in my stomach and my head was spinning. (Ok, so I cried briefly too - the teen in me again:).

Statement necklace

In the whirlwind of hockey, skiing, carpooling and cooking for the family, someone special often slides off the list: you. This Spring, why not splash out with a little sparkle and opt for the season's smash hit - statement necklaces.

Statement jewelry pieces frame your face like the chokers originally made famous by 90's 90210 fashion plates - Brenda and Kelly.

Perfection is mass produced

"Can you make the letters perfectly lined up on that pendant?" a client asked me at an artisan gift show. All of us (now 13 reps) get great joy in pleasing clients. I wanted to say yes but, the truth is, I love hand-stamping's hand-made/uneven quality. It is done, by hand, one letter and number at a time. It looks easy...it is not (ask all those who have insisted they can do it too. Just look at the pile of ruined silver accumulated over seven years). I love the old fashioned typewriter look. I love that it's old but timeless. I love it's imperfection.

A CHARMED LIFE

Collected over many years and treasured by the wearer, charms have the power to create a memory, evoke a sentiment and capture a moment in time.

My grandmother passed a few years ago and I am now the proud owner of her charm bracelet. She told me the charm stories many times. “This gondola is from our trip to Venice; the baby shoe marks your birthday; the stop sign with ‘I LOVE YOU’ was a birthday gift from your grandfather.”

Charms relay a visual history that belongs to the wearer and they are a wonderful keep sake for the next generation.

LAUREN LEE SMITH

Lauren Lee Smith is one of our all-time favorite “people wearing Suetables.” She’s a great actress, funny and stylish as hell.

She is staring in CTV/Fox's The Listener, and was nominated for a Gemini for Best Actress.

Best of all she wears her heart on her sleeve, she’s talented and is beautiful inside and out. And, of course, we love it that she asked her stylist if her character on The Listener could wear Suetables jewellery. She stakes Suetables bracelets with her watch.

A rising Canadian star selects Suetables to create her personalized bridesmaid gifts

Enuka Okuma, BC born actress, has appeared on TV shows like Madison and Traders, for which she garnered three Gemini Awards. She was also seen in Grey’s Anatomy and 24.

Currently, Enuka plays Traci Nash on the hit show Rookie Blue on Global and ABC – it’s a cop drama with a twist - they’re all rookies and have no idea what they’re doing.

Good bye 2011, Hello 2012

Oh what a year it has been! A fun, exciting, challenging, scary and busy year. I post the YAY sign above to celebrate that we've made it through a crazy busy and record-breaking holiday season. Phew!

Every year, I select a word or a few words and it becomes my theme for the year. http://www.suetables.com/ca/your-life-your-word-your-suetables It reflects where I am at or where I want to be. Last year, it was:
